Simplification

Expressions with exponents can be simplified by using the properties for exponents.

Example:

frac{x^3*x^2}{x^4}=frac{x^{3+2}}{x^4}=frac{x^5}{x^4}=x^{5-4}=x

First we take advantage of the property saying that two numbers with the same base but different exponents are multiplied together by adding the exponents together.

Then we take advantage of the property saying that two numbers having the same base but different exponents are divided by subtracting the exponents from each other.
