A fraction is way to express a number by division.
A fraction consists of a numerator above a denominator separated by a horizontal line.
For example, the division 5 : 6 can be expressed with the fraction:
The result of 5 divided by 6 is 0.83333…. Expressed as a decimal number this result is not exact.
Expressed as a fraction, however, the result is exact.
Sometimes you will see fractions written with a slash, because that’s an easier way to make a fraction with an ordinary keyboard:
Names of the fractions
Fractions can be named after the numerator and the denominator. For example:
Is also called “one forth”, because the numerator is one and the denominator is four.
You can also explain the fraction with a pizza divided into four slices. One forth is when you are allowed to take one slice out of the four slices.
